Mandatory Class List
Every time I talk about music school with other musicians, we have a similar conversation. It goes a little something like this:
”How did we not learn this?!” “Why did we have to do that?!” “I felt so demoralized that I almost quit playing.” “I think that I actually got worse while I was there.” “Orchestra was just. awful.”
Music school, like all of us, definitely has some room to grow. Along those lines, here’s my recommendation for what courses music-schoolers should take during our time being music-schooled:
- Bookkeeping for Freelance Musicians
- Score Study and Marking
- Arranging Jazz and Popular Music
- Special Topics in Music Law
- Suzuki Piano Accompaniment
- How to Lead Group Classes
- Public and Video Speaking
- Adobe Creative Suite
- Conductorless Chamber Orchestra
- Music Learning Theory 101
Equipped with these tools, our young musicians would enter the workforce better prepared to tackle the real-world creative challenges that we face on a day-to-day basis.
